Health History Lunch Pistachios

Have you ever sat there while eating your Borna Roasted & Salted pistachios and wondered how they’re farmed? Now is the time to stop wondering and get reading! Let’s take a look at some of the key elements that it takes to get that pistachio off the tree into your mouth.

Our premium pistachios are grown on our family-owned farms. The pistachio trees are planted in large orchards and take approximately seven years to produce a significant amount of pistachios. The hot dry weather is perfect (unlike the miserable weather here in the UK) for pistachio trees to produce pistachios that are packed full of nutrients and rich that are in flavour.

Pistachios grow in clusters on the branches of each tree. Pistachios have a protective layer over their hard shells, this called the epicarp, you could say it’s the ‘skin’ of the pistachio. The epicarp keeps tightly to the hard shell of the pistachio and is reddish/yellow colour.

Once the epicarp is ripe it brightens to more of a yellow colour, this means it’s now time to harvest the pistachios! Harvest time this is around September. The ripe pistachios need a little nudge to fall off the tree, so, the tree is given a sharp shake to help remove them, don’t worry it doesn’t hurt them or the tree. The epicarp can easily be peeled off the pistachio’s shell now it’s ripe and harvested.

The pistachios then go through a washing process to make sure they’re extra clean.  They’re then taken through a drying process, which is completed in two stages, firstly by machines and secondly, laid out in sun to dry for a day or so, depending on the weather. A sorting process is then carried out to separate the open and closed shelled pistachios from one another. They’re then graded on their size. After the sorting and grading, we hand select our pistachios to ensure that you only receive the best of the best.

All of our shelled pistachios that are packed in our retail bags are Naturally opened. ‘What’re the benefits of Naturally opened Pistachios?’ I hear you ask, well, not only do they taste premium but they look it too!

The pistachios are then whisked off to be roasted and lightly salted. They’re then shipped off to Leister, England. It is here that they are then packed in our distinctive premium packs.

Now time for the best part…It’s time to eat the pistachios!
